Looking Toward 2012 and Beyond: The KRI Capital Campaign

At the Kundalini Research Institute, we are working to lay the cornerstone of the living legacy that is Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®.  Our capital campaign has multiple components—research grants, Reach Out-Teach Out programs, and product development—but the cornerstone on which they are all built is The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings.

Other Programs of Interest

Research Grants: Research has just begun at the University of Utah on the effects of meditation and Breathwalk® on resilient pain and PTSD in veterans. There is an ongoing research program on the effects of Kirtan Kriya on brain patterns and memory through the University of Pennsylvania. Sat Bir Singh Khalsa continues his 5-year study on meditation, Kundalini Yoga and sleep rhythms at Harvard Medical School; he also is centrally involved in meditation research conferences and collaborations globally.

To carry our commitment to usable research and documentation to all interested teachers, we have packages available for the average Teacher to implement simple field studies in their daily Kundalini Yoga classes.

This area is vast and the potential applications are infinite.  KRI is working to partner with large research facilities, universities and community colleges, and private foundations in order to build momentum and interest in Kundalini Yoga as a viable form of intervention, prevention and sustainable approaches to health and wellness. KRI Research Page

Reach Out –Teach Out Program: KRI has programs expanding into areas as diverse as rural Florida to mainland China to West Africa. Providing grants for KRI programs in underserved communities or scholarships for students to study directly with KRI is a part of our Reach OutTeach Out program, which will continue to grow as we seek new opportunities to serve the global community. Translations are also a big part of our Reach Out-Teach Out program. Translating many existing books of Yogi Bhajan’s teachings, including Teacher Training Manuals, into Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese, and more. We Are KRI

Product Development: The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings is integral to KRIs product development, because without these teachings—the original assets—we wouldn’t have this incredibly rich resource to draw from and create user-friendly products and services. KRI is currently developing a project for the women’s teachings: I Am a Woman: Reader, Yoga

Manual and DVD Series. Each year we focus on a new area to update or introduce for the very first time. Future projects

include: The Master’s Touch DVD Series, 21 Stages of Meditation by Gurucharan Singh Khalsa, Ph.D. and Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., an online digital library of single kriyas and meditations, mp3 downloads, on-line video courses, and more. KRI's The Source

The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings

As teachers and practitioners of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®, you are a part of the living legacy that is The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings. With your help, we have made great progress. The goal and scope of The Library of Teachings is to archive, preserve and create online access to the entire recorded library—more than 8,000 audio and video assets. The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings is being built in three stages: transcript repository, archive of original assets, and online, digital resource.

Stage One: The Transcript Repository

  • Transcription Project: In our Bangalore, India office, KRI continues to transcribe lectures. Over 6,000 lectures are transcribed in either first or second form to date. More than 2,000 are yet to be transcribed. This project will be completed in 2009.

  • Searchable Transcription Database: Teams of volunteers continue the process of identifying and tagging concepts from the teachings within the text of his lectures, to create a meaningful, searchable database.

  • Library Management System and the Digital Asset Management System (DAM): KRI implemented a Library Management System in 2008 and has a full-time Librarian on staff. This is a first step toward a more comprehensive DAM that will integrate the audio, video, and transcription data assets into a single, accessible, and user-friendly online data management system.

Stage Two: The Archive

Our archival partners—Scene Savers (video) and Mahern Audio Engineering (audio)—began the Archival Project in January of 2009. After a thorough Pilot Project in 2008, work began in earnest and so far, more than 200 audio and 100 video tapes have been archived. The plan for 2009 is to archive 100 audio and 50 video tapes each month. The audio tapes date back to 1969 and are fragile—so they are the archive’s first priority. We’re also archiving the oldest video tapes—from the early 80s—to ensure we don’t lose any of these precious teachings.

In order to meet our goal, our current projections indicate that we need $700,000 for Stage Two of The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings.  We’ve raised more than $70,000 from individuals like you already—and with grants from corporations, we’ve already funded a quarter of our goal.

KRI is committed to funding this archival project and we need your help. We are making a long-term commitment to this project and we invite you to do the same. With our online donation program, you can become a friend of The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings today!

Other Components of the Archive

Photo Archiving Project: A recent individual grant enables us to start the project of archiving the thousands of historic photos of Yogi Bhajan and the people he touched. For more information see Photo Archive page.

Correspondence Archive: Yogi Bhajan counseled and taught many of his students through his letters. We are continuing to organize, file, research and compile the teachings found in these letters.

Stage Three: Online Resource

Ultimately, The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings will be a rich online resource for teachers, students and practitioners of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®, including a searchable lecture repository, real-time searches of audio and video clips, and a complete kriya and meditation database.

Each of these components is in progress now. Stage Two—the Archive—is our priority through 2012. But as the Library Management System evolves into the Digital Asset Management System, to include the lectures, video and audio assets, and Photo Archive, we continue to build toward our final vision of The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings. At this stage of development, we are unable to attach a final dollar amount to this final vision; but when the progress of the archive reaches a stage that we can begin to attach real numbers to this final stage, we will continue to update the global community of teachers, students and practitioners.
