Pilot Project in 2008
The Archival Pilot Project, which digitized 100 assets (video and audio) from the various ‘generations’ of media to project what we would need to complete the entire archive, ect was completed in
August of 2008. Here’s what we learned:
Of the 100 assets in the Pilot, only a small percentage needed physical restoration—that’s good news!
Scene Savers (our video archival partner) has adjusted the pricing to better reflect our collection—so we’re paying based on length of the actual asset, rather than the averages used in the original bid—which will save us money in the long run—more good news!
Mahern Audio (our audio archival partner) discovered that it will require more time to process the files than originally anticipated due to the quality of the original cassettes and the length of the recordings. We can now expect to pay $1 per minute on average. This is still well below the industry average for archival services and includes not only digitization but also signal processing—still good news!
Outputs will include Digital Betacam, QuickTime DV Files, and DVD copies of each video asset and 16-bit access files and LTO 4 tape for the audio assets.
